This marks the final football publication for the PiRate Ratings until sometime in the Summer, when we will be in the process of updating the college football ratings for the 2019 season.  Thank You to all that patronize this site.  If you haven’t checked out our other ratings, we cover college basketball with new publications on Monday and Friday until the end of the regular season and then daily through Selection Sunday.  Our annual “Bracketnomics 505” comes out the Monday evening after Selection Sunday, and it has been our most read feature through the years.  We offer all this free to you, because we are a group of math geeks that were once athletes in the dark ages.

Our goal is to supply you with fun information and not to encourage you to wager money using our data for your research.  None of the contributors here at this site ever wager money on our recommendations.  We understand that there are professionals that come to this site, and more than one of you has told us that there is something we put out that does influence how you wager.  We hope for your sake, it doesn’t send you to the Poor House, because  we don’t have any more room here.

Note: Virginia’s outstanding 6th Man De’Andre Hunter is out for the season, and this will knock the Cavaliers down a few notches in our criteria.  If you have not submitted your brackets yet, you might take this into consideration, as the Cavaliers have lost a potent weapon that could play anywhere on the floor.  He was to Virginia what John Havlicek was to the Boston Celtics in the 1960’s, the 6th man that was the secret sauce of Red Auerbach’s extended success.  Without Hunter, Virginia reverts back to a great defensive team that lacks enough offensive power to beat an athletic opponent the likes of Arizona or Cincinnati.  Hunter was instrumental in helping the Cavs secure two wins over Syracuse, and road wins against Miami and Virginia Tech.

The PiRates New Criteria Shows Beginner’s Luck

Did you read our lengthy piece yesterday pertaining to our brand new paradigm?  The PiRates scrapped our old, archaic system of picking brackets and debuted our new mostly statistical metric based criteria.

We were not sure how successful it might be in the first year of its existence, and we are sure we will need to tweak it some in the ensuing years, but we started out with a bang last night.

We hit both games and basically called how St. Bonaventure would send the Sons of Westwood home to SoCal.  We wrote that we believed the Bonnies would force turnovers on the Bruins, which would be the deciding factor in the game, and it was spot on.

We are reminded that a broken watch is also correct twice a day.

UNC-Asheville should make it to the Championship Game, but Liberty could be a tough out in the semifinals.  Radford and Winthrop are fairly evenly matched on the other side of the bracket, but Radford probably has the better overall talent and is playing a little stronger at this point in the season.  Both Radford and Winthrop split their series against UNCA, with the home team winning every game, but UNCA narrowly won their home games over the two contenders, while they were blown out on the road.  The big news is that UNCA as the #1 seed will be at home for all games it plays in this tournament.

Bucknell is the overwhelming favorite to cruise to the Patriot League Championship.  The Bison did lose at home to Boston U during the regular season, but they won 15 of 16 games after that, with the only loss coming on the road against Lehigh in overtime.

One player to watch in this tournament is forward Zach Thomas of Bucknell.  He averages 21 points and 9 rebounds per game.  He is a multi-tool player, as he might be the best passer on the team as well.

Colgate has a couple of streaky three-point shooters in Will Rayman and Jordan Swopshire, but the Raiders have no inside muscle and will have to rely on hot shooting to have a chance to get past Bucknell, if they make it to the title game.

Lehigh is the team to watch in this tournament.  The Hawks are red hot and ride an eight-game winning streak as the tournament begins.  Included in that streak is a win over Bucknell, where the Hawks connected on 11 of 21 three-point shots.  Lehigh has what Clark Kellogg calls “spurtability.”  They get hot streaks and go on big runs, fueled by excellent defensive play from their guards that can pressure the ball.   A player to watch for Lehigh is tiny guard Kahron Ross.  He can pick your pockets clean and then feed a teammate for an easy bucket.  A potential semifinal game with Bucknell could be the most exciting tournament game this week.

If you were wondering what Stadium TV is, this is a free over the air network that is available in most markets.  It was American Sports Network at one time and merged with Campus Insiders online.  You can check for the proper channel in your market here: https://23455-presscdn-pagely.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Stadium-Active-Markets-February-5.pdf

Conference Tournament Update–Saturday, March 4, 2017

One #1 Seed Falls

Regular season Ohio Valley Conference Champion Belmont has become the first number one seed to fall in their conference tournament, relegating the Bruins to the NIT with an automatic bid.  Jacksonville State, picked to finish dead last in the OVC this year, has shocked many under first-year head coach Ray Harper, who previously guided Western Kentucky to consecutive NCAA Tournament berths.  JSU upset Belmont in Nashville last night to set up a championship game with UT-Martin.  By 10:30 PM EST tonight the winner of this game will become the first official team in the Big Dance.

The Ivy League Tournament Situation

Princeton secured the regular season Ivy League Championship last night, when the Tigers completed a sweep of Harvard.  The Crimson are set in the number two slot, while Yale has clinched the third of the four conference tournament seeds.

The fourth and final spot up for grabs in the inaugural Ivy League Tournament to be played in the Palestra in Philadelphia is still to be decided with three of the remaining five teams still in the race with tonight’s games remaining.  Let’s look at the possible scenarios.

First, at the moment, Penn and Columbia are tied with 5-8 league records.  Dartmouth and Brown are tied at 4-9, but Brown has been eliminated from qualifying on all possible outcomes.  So, we are talking Penn, Columbia, and Dartmouth still with a chance to earn the number four seed.

  1. If Penn beats Harvard and Yale beats Columbia, then Penn gets the #4 seed
  2. If Columbia beats Yale and Harvard beats Penn, then Columbia gets the #4 seed
  3. If Both Penn and Columbia win tonight, and Brown and Dartmouth both win, then Penn gets the #4 Seed
  4. If Both Penn and Columbia lose tonight, and Dartmouth beats Princeton, then Dartmouth gets the #4 Seed
  5. If Both Penn and Columbia lose tonight and Brown beats Cornell, then Columbia gets the #4 Seed

Mount St. Mary’s and Cal Poly are virtually assured of going to Dayton for the First Round.  Albany and Texas Southern or Weber St. are the most likely teams to fill the other two #16 seed spots forced to play in the opening round.

The Bubbler

The higher up each team is on this bubble list, the better.  Providence moved off the Bubble with their Big East Championship Game win.  They cannot be an opening round team.  As of Sunday morning, the Bubble has shrunk to eight teams that will make the field and ten other Bubble teams hoping that the Committee will find some reason to include them in the field.  Teams five through eight are the last four in, and teams nine through 12 are the first four out.

North Carolina St. moves into position to make a push to the Bubble

St. Bonaventure stays alive as a possible Bubble Buster.

Providence moves up the Bubble to last 4 in with Big East win

Clemson misses out on big upset to fall into NIT pool

St. Joe’s knocks off Dayton to solidify their hold on a bid and jeopardize the Flyers’ chances

Nebraska’s collapse against Ohio St. sends Cornhuskers down a few notches but still in the Dance

Louisiana Tech’s semifinal defeat of Southern Miss. gives Bulldogs a shot at an at-large should they lose

Toledo gets into Bubble mix with semifinal win in the MAC

LSU completely out of the mix after blowing early lead versus Kentucky

Georgia is an enigma—Bulldogs should be in the discussion with their record since November

The Bubbler

The higher up each team is on this bubble list, the better.  St. Joseph’s has now moved from The Bubble to Safe status.  As of Saturday morning, just 10 teams on The Bubble will make the NCAA Tournament, while teams 11 through 20 are on the outside, looking in.  Teams listed at numbers 7 through 10 are the last four in.  Teams listed at numbers 11 through 14 comprise the first four out.  Keep an eye on St. Bonaventure, as the Bonnies could burst a bubble if they win the A-10 title.  North Carolina St. could do the same thing with a win over Duke today in the ACC Semifinals.  A Georgia win over Kentucky today has to get the Bulldogs moved into the discussion.  UGA finished tied for second in the SEC with a 12-6 record, and the Committee has to give that some serious thought.

The Bubbler

The higher up each team is on this bubble list, the better.  Colorado has now moved from The Bubble to Safe status.  Pittsburgh has probably now done enough, but we are leaving the Panthers at the top of the Bubble Teams.  As of today, just 10 teams on The Bubble will make the NCAA Tournament, while teams 11 through 17 are on the outside, looking in.  Teams listed at numbers 7 through 10 are the last four in.  Teams listed at numbers 11 through 14 comprise the first four out.  As conference tournament upsets occur, the bubble teams in the tournament will begin to shrink.  So, far, no major upsets have occurred that would add teams to the field and remove the number of Bubble teams from the “in” list.

The Bubbler

The higher up each team is on this bubble list, the better.  Colorado has now moved from The Bubble to Safe status.  As of today, just 10 teams on The Bubble will make the NCAA Tournament, while teams 11 through 20 are on the outside, looking in.
