Villanova tops Xavier to hurt the Musketeers’ chances to avoid an opening round game in Dayton

Louisiana Tech crushes Rice & Southern Mississippi knocks off Tulane to give C-USA an outside chance to get a second team into the Dance

The Bubbler

The higher up each team is on this bubble list, the better.  As of today, the cut-off line to get into the Dance is #17, with teams listed at #14 through #17 as opening round teams as part of the last four in.  Teams listed at 18 and lower are not in the tournament, with teams listed #18 through #21 as the first four out.  As conference tournament upsets occur, the bubble teams in the tournament will begin to shrink.  For instance, if Evansville were to upset Wichita State this afternoon, the Missouri Valley would add a second team to the Dance, and the bubble would burst for the last team in, which today would be Tennessee, moving the Volunteers to the first team out. All others below Tennessee would then move down one notch.

Games Affecting The Bubble Tonight

It will not affect the Bubble, but Harvard can become the first team to officially clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament if the Crimson can win at rival Yale.  A Bulldog win would send Harvard to Brown Saturday night with a second chance to wrap up the Ivy League title, while Yale hosted Dartmouth.  If Harvard then lost to Brown while Yale beat Dartmouth, the two rivals would finish tied for first at 11-3 in the conference.  Even though Yale would have swept Harvard during the regular season, the Ivy League mandates that a playoff decide the conference champion.  The game will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network.

Ivy League Regular Season Championship Details

Harvard (11-1/24-4) currently leads Yale (9-3/15-11) by two games with two games left for both teams.  On Friday, March 7, Harvard plays at Yale (Yale won at Harvard), and if the Crimson beat the Bulldogs, they will be Ivy League champions.  If Yale wins, then the Saturday night outcomes will determine whether Harvard wins or a playoff must be played.  On Saturday, Harvard plays at Brown (7-5/15-11), while Yale hosts Dartmouth (3-9/10-16).  If Harvard and Yale tie at 11-3, even though Yale would have swept Harvard, the Ivy League mandates that the teams face in a playoff game.  Harvard had a tough time beating Brown at home, so this weekend’s ending road trip could be tricky, and it is not impossible that the two arch-rivals may play a third time for the Ivy crown.

The Bubbler

The higher up each team is on this bubble list, the better.  As of today, the cut-off line to get into the Dance is #15, with teams listed at #12 through #15 as the opening round, last four in.  Teams listed at 16 and lower are not in the tournament, with teams listed #16 through #19 as the first four out.  As conference tournament upsets occur, the bubble line will move up from 15 to a lower number.

30 Bracketologist’s Average

Once again, the PiRate Ratings have brought together 30 of the top Bracketologists in the country, none of whom garner the headlines like the big boys on the major networks.  These guys work in anonymity but routinely do better at picking the 68 teams.

Beginning this week, we subdivide the Bubble teams into Bubble-In (Bi) and Bubble-Out (Bo).  Bi teams are those in the final 8-12 that would be in if the Big Dance began today, while Bo teams would be out if the Big Dance began today.  Not only must the Bo teams jump over the Bi teams, they also must deal with upset winners in conferences where multiple teams will receive at-large invitations

Take a look at this week’s 30-geniuses and their bracket picks.
