The PiRates Have Come Ashore For The 2009-10 Football Season

Come Aboard The PiRate Ship at http://www.piratings.webs.com

Ahoy there mates!  After a summer of mayhem and merriment on the high seas, the PiRates are rested and ready to hoist the pigskin flag to the top.  Yes, we are back for a new season.  We have some exciting changes to tell you about, and it includes more in-depth coverage college and the NFL.

First and foremost, we will produce complete ratings for both college and professional football this season.  As a result, the Pro Football Computer Simulation League has folded after two seasons.  It monopolized the available time even with five of us here to serve you.

The next big change concerns the PiRate Ratings for the NFL.  Prior to this season, these ratings were calculated with set mathematical formulae which could be easily reproduced if you had the formula.  These ratings were no different than about three dozen other retrodictive ratings available on the Internet.  Starting this season, the NFL PiRate Ratings are based on very similar information to the college ratings.  The ratings are purely predictive and have both human input and computerized formulae in their calculation.

There’s one more change.  The PiRates have launched a webpage, and through that webpage, you will be able to receive our top picks of the week for college and pro football.  What you do with that information is your choice, and we do not condone wagering with real money.  We do not wager real money here, but we do use our picks to participate in legal contests that require no investment.  We won’t kid you with scam advertisements telling you that you are guaranteed to win and you can move on a game like it has already been played.  We won’t have 16 different wagering plans (like the 4-star play of the week and the guaranteed lock of the week) where we can toot our horn weekly when one or two of them outperform the average and the others lose.  What we will present will be what we ourselves use in our contests.  This will include straight plays, teasers, and money line picks.  For what it’s worth, we have been keeping records since 1981, and in that time, these weekly picks have beaten the spread just over 58% of the time.  In those 28 seasons, we have beaten the magical number of 52.4% (what it takes to earn a profit) 24 times.

Last year, our college picks for the regular season finished 71-51-5 for 58.2%.  Our NFL picks finished 47-35-3 for 57.3%.  We did not issue playoff picks officially, but for what it’s worth we called the Super Bowl almost exactly the way it played out.  Our pick was 27-25 Pittsburgh and the exact score was 27-23.  Our founder believed the game would have an outstanding chance of going to overtime, and the Steelers were one play away from having to kick the tying field goal in the final minute when they were trailing 23-20.

We’ll start the season by previewing each of the NCAA FBS conferences, followed by a preview of the eight NFL divisions.  The first PiRate Picks will run in early September.  This blog will contain the ratings for all 120 FBS and 32 NFL teams.  For college, we’ll include the old mean ratings.  For the NFL games, we’ll include the mean and the bias ratings just like last year.

The new webpage will exclusively allow you to see our weekly picks.

Are you ready for some football?

Pro Football Computer Simulation: Week 17–December 29, 2008

Pro Football Computer Simulation

Week 17-December 28, 2008

The regular season of year two in the Pro Football Computer Simulation League has now concluded with the final week of games simulated Sunday evening.

The playoffs will begin next week, and I have included the playoff schedule following this week’s recaps.

1981 Cincinnati  31  2003 Kansas City  21

Pete Johnson rushed for 137 yards and two scores, and Ken Anderson passed for two others, as the Bengals finished with a winning record, but just barely missed out on the 6th playoff berth in the AFC.

All season long, the Packers relied on a strong offense to outscore opponents, but in clinching the NFC North, it was the defense that led the way.  The green and gold stop troops held Barry Sanders to 71 yards rushing on 18 attempts; the Packer front line recorded two sacks on crucial third down plays; and they intercepted two passes that set up a touchdown and field goal.

Matt Cavanaugh, subbing for the injured Joe Montana, came into the game in the fourth quarter and tossed touchdown passes to Freddie Solomon and Dwight Clark, as the 49ers erased an 11-point deficit to beat the Redskins.  Washington still won the NFC East thanks to losses by the Cowboys and Giants.

Pro Football Computer Simulation For Week 15: December 15, 2008

Pro Football Computer Simulation Week 15-December 15, 2008

The simulation for Week 15 has just been completed, and there were a couple of interesting games of note.  The rematch of Super Bowl 19 took place in Miami where the 1984 Dolphins knocked the 1984 49ers out of playoff contention, giving the 1999 Rams the NFC West title.  With the win, the Dolphins moved to within just one game of the playoff bubble, as four teams are tied at 7-7 in the AFC and 7-7 is the second best record of potential AFC Wildcard teams.

The big upset took place in Oakland.  The 2000 Raiders beat the 2007 Patriots.

Here are the results from this week’s simulation:

The Raiders took advantage of five New England turnovers and converted them into two touchdowns and three field goals, and the silver and black forced two safeties as well.  New England still led 28-27 after Tom Brady scrambled for a 5 yard touchdown run with 4:08 left to play, but David Dunn returned the following kickoff 67 yards to the Patriots’ 24 yard line.  Rich Gannon completed back-to-back passes to Tim Brown to move the ball to the four, and Tyrone Wheatley scored on the next play.

Pro Football Computer Simulation League: Week 14-12-08-08

As year two of the Pro Football Computer Simulation League begins to reach its conclusion, it is apparent that there are more quality teams in the NFC than the AFC.  If the simulated playoffs were to begin today, the 1984 San Francisco 49ers and 1992 Dallas Cowboys would be out with 8-5 records, while in the AFC, 7-6 would be good enough for the 1990 Buffalo Bills to qualify as a wildcard team.

Here is a look at results for this weekend.  The weather played an important part in many games, causing more turnovers and less offense on the average.

Pro Football Computer Simulation League: Week 13-December 1, 2008

The Pro Football Computer Simulation League for 2008 uses a fantastic season from the past between 1981 and 2007 for each of the 32 current NFL Franchises.  It uses the actual 2008 NFL schedule and then simulates games between the past great teams.  Last year’s simulation involved teams from 1960 to 1979.  The 1967 Oakland Raiders edged the 1968 Dallas Cowboys in the Simper Bowl.

Here are the results of this week’s games:

2000 Tennessee Titans  24  1991 Detroit Lions  6

Jevon Kearse picked up two sacks and Frank Wycheck caught 5 passes for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns, as the Titans spoiled Thanksgiving for Detroit fans.

The 1998 Vikings proved they belong in the playoff chase as they moved in to a tie for second just one game behind Green Bay in the black and blue division.  Chicago had the ball at the Minnesota 6 yard line on 2nd & 1 late in the game.  The Bears were unable to score and turned the ball over on downs at the Viking 2 yard line.  Jimmy Hitchcock’s 56 yard interception return on the first play of the 4th quarter proved to be the winning score.

Pro Football Computer Simulation: Week 12-November 24, 2008

The Pro Football Computer Simulation for 2008-09 takes the 32 current franchises in the NFL and selects, from the years 1981 to 2008, an outstanding season for these teams.

The simulation uses the actual 2008-09 NFL schedule and then plays the game with the computer acting as coach of both teams.  I have no interaction or partiality in this.  The computer generates a play-by-play and box score for every game.

The PiRate Ratings you see are the same ratings for the real NFL, as these ratings only need final scores and strength of schedule.

Last year’s simulation of teams from 1960 to 1979 saw the 1967 Oakland Raiders defeating the 1968 Dallas Cowboys in Simulated Super Bowl I.

Here are the results from Week 11’s games:

1981 Cincinnati 28 2005 Pittsburgh 17
