The PiRate Ratings for college basketball for the 2022-23 season debuts today with our first release of ratings for the year. If you are new to this site, our college basketball power ratings use an algorithm based on the four factors, a couple of extra analytical metrics, and schedule strength. The rating is based on 100.0 being average. If a team’s rating is above 100, it is better than average, and if a team’s rating is below 100, it is weaker than average. Because at the beginning of the season, power conference teams like to fatten up on “patsies” that come to the power teams’ home gyms, collect a check to stay operational, and then go home with a lopsided loss, the ratings need for every team to play 10 games before the statistics normalize enough to be meaningful. As of today, all 363 Division I teams have played 10 games.
Historically, the best team in the nation rates somewhere in the 120’s, with an occasional all-time great approaching 130. This season is looking to be one where the best teams are not among the best of all time, while the worst teams are better than historic worst teams. Thus, there is more parity than in the past, and because of that some of these so-called patsies are venturing into power conference gyms and leaving with both a fat check and a fat W.
This season, our plan is to update the ratings on Mondays and Fridays. We will issue spreads of games daily starting tomorrow (no games today), followed by the rankings from 1-363, followed by the rankings in alphabetical order, followed by the rankings by conference.
Our Bracketology begins Friday and will then publish in separate segments on Tuesdays and Fridays in the afternoon. We will also issue some special reports, including an update on which teams have National Championship resumes, as well as one of our most popular annual features, a list of the low-major and mid-major head coaches, and the top assistant coaches that we predict could turn around the misfortunes of a power team. This list has received critical acclaim because it has been extremely accurate in predicting future success in the big time. Coaches like Eric Musselman, Chris Jans, Nate Oats, Matt McMahon, Mike Young, and Todd Golden have been featured on this list in the past, and they are all doing bang-up jobs in the big-time. Find out who we peg to be future power conference stars when other coaches aren’t working out at their schools. This will be published in late January.
As Conference Tournament action tips off in late February and early March, we will be on top of the action, and our bracketology frequency will begin to increase. Then, after Selection Sunday, we will immediately begin compiling our 2023 Bracketnomics report, where we use certain metrics to determine which team has the best championship resume and which teams are the top contenders. We have won many bracket pools for our readers thrughout the last 22 years. And, last year was no difference, as our system picked Kansas to win the National Championship before tournament action began. This system is not 100% foolproof, but we have picked the title winner more years than we have missed. Except for Connecticut’s two most recent titles, every 21st Century team that won the championship fit our criteria. Ironically, today, UConn has the best overall resume to match a historic national champion. UCLA, Purdue, and Kansas are the next three in line.
