5th Annual PiRate Ratings Top 20 Coaches Ready For The Big Time
Five years ago, around NCAA Men’s College Basketball Conference Tournament time, I looked at the major college basketball head coaching jobs that were available or about to become available. There were openings at Louisville, Memphis, Connecticut, Georgia, and Ole Miss.
It was at this time that I began to look at the top mid-major and low-major head coaches and top power conference assistant coaches that might be the best candidates for these jobs. If I remember correctly, I missed on all five of the big openings that year.
The next year, I vowed to actually do some homework earlier in the season to look at which coaches were best prepared to take over a big basketball program. This time, I was hot with my picks. Among my elite few that I predicted great things if a big time program hired them were Nate Oats, Eric Musselman, and Kyle Smith. Alabama, Arkansas, and Washington State decided that these three coaches were ready as well.
In the next annual edition, I listed Steve Forbes, Matt McMahon, Wes Miller, Chris Jans, Todd Golden, Lamont Paris, and Mike Young among a baker’s dozen others that were ready for the big time, listing Jans as the top candidate.
As of this year, these seven are coaching big programs.
Last year, trying to come up with a list of 20 coaches took an extra week because there were 33 on my list, and it took many hours to pick the 20 and leave 13 deserving coaches off the list.
Last year’s list was a piece of cake compared to this season. There were 47 coaches that were on my original list. Narrowing that to 30 was quite difficult. Picking the top 20 took three extra days.
If you don’t see your favorite potentially great next power college coach on this list, there’s a good chance he made the original list. There are a few exceptions that I did not consider part of this equation. Here are coaches that might still receive a chance to coach at a big school, but they are by no means up and coming.
Steve Alford: Alford has already coached at five schools, and he has won at all five schools, including Iowa and UCLA, but he’s never had the great season where he took a team to a Final Four. He followed Musselman at Nevada and after a transition phase, he has the Wolfpack contending for the Mountain West Championship. He reminds me of Larry Brown, except there haven’t been any NBA stints.
Brian Dutcher: If Dutcher wasn’t 64 years old, he might be in the top three on my list. He’s proven that he can keep San Diego State an elite program year after year. There is a chance that this program might become a Pac-12 team in the near future, so that might be his chance.
Ron Hunter: Tulane is in the American Athletic Conference, of which Houston and Memphis are members. I cannot consider the AAC to be Mid-Major, so by that reason, Hunter is already coaching in the big time and doing the same great job he did at Georgia State and IUPUI. He might get a look by an even bigger program, but in my mind, he’s already made the big time.
Bob Marlin: Marlin spent 12 years at Sam Houston State and now 13 years at Louisiana. His resume is more than strong enough to get a big time job, but he’s in his 25th year in coaching and hasn’t made that leap.
Richard Pitino: Pitino, like Alford has already coached in the big time at Minnesota, and he did not sustain the program. At New Mexico, he’s made the Lobos an NCAA Tournament team, but I think he’s a lot like Frank Solich after he was fired from the Nebraska football head coaching job and found success at Ohio. Check back in two or three years if he can sustain the Lobo program.
These Coaches Made the first cut, but were eliminated in the second cut. They are all solid coaches, but there are a couple dozen with better resumes at the current time.
Scott Nagy–Wright St.

Josh Schertz–Indiana St.
Niko Medved–Colorado St.
Stan Gouard–Southern Indiana

Chris Victor–Seattle
These six coaches made the second cut but were eliminated in the third cut.
Mark Pope–BYU
Bryce Drew–Grand Canyon
Joe Golding–UTEP
Ron Sanchez–Charlotte
Jared Grasso–Bryant
Takayo Siddle–UNC Wilminton
And, these three just narrowly missed the top 20, surviving until the final cut.
23. Eran Ganot–Hawaii
Randy Bennett disciple when assistant at Saint Mary’s
Excellent international recruiter
Teams play great defense, good on the boards, and limit mistakes
22. John Becker–Vermont
He’s going to be 55 years old by the end of the season, and he appears to be a lifer in the Green Mountain State, but he’s won 6 consecutive American East Conference titles and has a rebuilding team in a tie for first again this year. The Catamounts are now considered the favorite to win the league’s lone bid to the NCAA Tournament, which would be Becker’s fifth times in 12 seasons (eliminating the Covid year). His mentor, Mike Longergan, left Vermont for George Washington and did a bang-up job. Through Longeran, Becker is a branch of the Gary Williams tree. He might be a good fit for an Atlantic 10 or Big East team needing a new philosophy.
21. Keith Urgo–Fordham
It is close to impossible for a first-year head coach to be ready for the Big Time, but this may be one time to make an exception. Urgo, a Jay Wright protege, took over this Atlantic 10 doormat and quietly has the Rams at 16-4 and in 5th place out of 15 in the league. Fordham hasn’t had a 20-win season for 32 years, and the last time Fordham went from weak to strong in one year under a first-year coach, Digger Phelps was offered the Notre Dame job after that one season.
Urgo has done it via the quick fix, through the Transfer Portal, as Fordham’s top three players came that way. If he can get talent to leave the Deep South for The Bronx, then think what he might be able to do coaching in the Midwest, Atlantic Coast, South, or Southwest.
And now for the 20 that make our list of Coaches Ready For The Big Time.
20. Bob Richey–Furman
Richey flies under the radar in the Southern Conference. Wofford, East Tennessee State, UNC Greensboro, and Chattanooga had recent runs of success that propelled coaches to bigger and better jobs. Richey sort of anonymously can claim branches in both the Gene Keady and Dean Smith coaching trees, and his Furman teams play consistent offensive and defensive basketball, just like those patriarchs. To date, his conference record at Furman is 70-26, which comes to a better than 13-5 average. The only factor that keeps Richey from moving higher is that he has yet to win the SoCon Tournament.
19. Matt Langel–Colgate
4 straight Patriot League Championships and 86-34 record thru 2022 9-0/15-7 so far in 2023 has made Langel the King of the Patriot League. A Fran Dunphy, Langel played for and later assisted on Dunphy’s staff. His Red Raiders consistently play smart offensive basketball, and contrary to belief, offense is slightly more important than defense when it comes to winning basketball.
18. Mark Madsen–Utah Valley
Like the next guy on this list, this is a qualified selection. Madsen is a member of the LDS Church, so whether or not he would leave the State of Utah is debatable. He played college basketball at Stanford for Mike Montgomery on the Cardinal team that made the Final Four, and he enjoyed a lengthy career in the NBA as a player and an assistant coach. What separates him from other NBA coaches that took college head coaching jobs is the fact that he did have past experience as a college assistant. Madsen was known as “Mad Dog” in his playing days, and his UV teams play hard-nosed basketball in his image. Playing the Wolverines leaves players feeling like they played the Michigan Wolverines–in football.
17. Paul Mills–Oral Roberts
Like Madsen, Mills is a top 20 coach with qualifications. He has become a master at getting transfers, and he has proven he can make adjustments on the floor and take a team with less talent and beat a team with better talent. But, his religion is even more important to him, and I don’t see him leaving ORU for another job, unless it is a situation like Baylor, where he was once an assistant under Scott Drew. Financial gain may not be his driving force, as he has taken multiple pay cuts along the way to end up at ORU.
16. Dusty May–Florida Atlantic
Here is a coach that has finished just outside the top 20 the last two years, and with his team enjoying a breakout year, May will probably have to make a decision at the end of this season about moving away from Boca Raton (who would want to leave Boca?). May didn’t play college basketball. He was a student manager at Indiana and then began his coaching adventure working as a graduate assistant for Bob Knight, proving he could handle adversity. Add Mike Davis and Mike White to those he assisted, gaining valuable experience under White at Florida, where the Gators made an Elite 8 appearance. When he took over the FAU job, he faced a major rebuild. Former NBA player and coach Michael Curry had zero experience coaching at any college level when he took the job, and like 98% of all coaches with zero prior college experience, he failed miserably, leaving the Owl program in need of a complete overhaul. When May brought FAU home with a 17-16 record in year one, he immediately went on my radar. He stayed there in the two Covid seasons, and then last year, FAU made the CBI with a 19-win season. This year, the Owls are 19-1 and maybe one of the 10 best defensive teams in the nation. Should Jim Larranaga or Leornard Hamilton decide to retire, May might be the perfect candidate and not have to leave the Sunshine State.
15. A.W. Hamilton–Eastern Kentucky
If you like a coach and love to watch a team that plays 94 by 50 feet of basketball, this may be your guy. Hamilton’s teams press full-court, play pressure defense in the halfcourt, cheat in the passing lanes, and run the fast break on offense. The major plus is a super exciting brand of basketball that can become headaches for teams that have short preparation time. The disadvantage is that it requires more depth than normal, so if your team can’t go 10-deep, this system will lead to February Fatigue.
Hamilton can be classified as part of the Rick Pitino tree through Kevin Keatts. He also has some exceptional recruiting contacts through his time coaching at the post graduate basketball factory known as Hargrave Military Academy.
14. Jason Hooten–Sam Houston State
Hooten might move farther up this chain if the Bearkats win the WAC postseason tournament this year and then scare the pants off a major conference power in the Round of 64. If you are old, like me, you might remember the UCLA national champions of 1964, when the tiny Bruins ran a Duke team with two 6-10 starters out of the gym. You may also remember the great multiple pressure defenses that Al McGuire’s teams played at Marquette. Combine these two philosophies, and you get Coach Hooten. Opposing coaches take Maalox preparing to play against his teams. I saw SHSU come from down 14 points with eight minutes to go and still trailing by 12 with less than five minutes to go to win on a last-second 3-point shot to upset Oklahoma in Norman. The Bearkats looked a lot more poised than the Sooners down the stretch, and their spread offense isolated defenders that could then be screened to set up open threes. Hooten is a hidden gem in the Lone Star State.
13. Darian DeVries–Drake
DeVries may be staying at Drake for quite some time after signing a lengthy extension, but Power Conference schools have the money to buy out contracts to get the coach they want. DeVries definitely is worth the extra money.
DeVries spent several years as an assistant at Creighton, under former coach Dana Altman and current coach Greg McDermott. When he took over the Drake program, he inherited five players–total! He had to build up the roster almost like an expansion team in pro sports, and Drake figured to be a contender for last place in the tough Missouri Valley Conference. Instead, the Bulldogs tied for first in the MVC. In 2021, Drake began the season winning its first 18 games. They earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Wichita State before bowing to USC.
Last year, with yet another heavy round of turnover, Drake wasn’t expected to contend for the tough MVC title, but they swept Loyola of Chicago in the regular season before falling to the Ramblers in the Championship Round of Arch Madness. Drake visits Belmont this weekend for possibly the game that could decide who wins the #1 seed for this year’s Arch Madness. DeVries is more than ready to take over a Big 12 or Big Ten program.
12. Kyle Keller–Stephen F. Austin
Any coach that can take a Low-Major school to Durham, North Carolina, and beat Duke during Coach K’s reign has to rate as an A+ coach. Keller has a rich pedigree which includes stints assisting Billy Kennedy at Texas A&M, Bill Self at Kansas, and Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma St.
As of this writing on January 26, 2023, Keller has a 140-63 record, 80-25 in the last four years. Keller’s teams are up-tempo and exciting to watch, and they always compete for the conference title. SFA has moved from the Southland Conference to the tougher Western Athletic Conference, but the Lumberjacks have proven to be up to the task. Additionally, SFA continues to show they aren’t intimidated by big time competition. The Lumberjacks ventured into Allen Fieldhouse and competed for 40 minutes against Kansas last year, before losing by eight.
11. Ryan Odom–Utah St.
When former Utah State coach Craig Smith left Utah State for Utah, the son of former Virginina, Wake Forest, and South Carolina coach Dave Odom took this job and has done a bang-up job with the Aggies. Odom was the coach at Maryland-Baltimore County, when his team became the only #16 seed to beat a #1 seed when UMBC topped Virginia.
Utah State is an exciting team to watch. The Aggies know how to move the ball around and get open three-pointers. At 16-5, USU is on the Bubble for an at-large bid. Odom is on the Bubble for a power conference job.
10. Rob Senderoff–Kent State
He’s become a fixture in the MAC at the MACC, and he may decide to spend the rest of his coaching career at Kent State, but Senderoff knows how to coach. His teams play harassing, in your face man to man defense and can make it look like the Golden Flashes have six players on the floor. If he’s going to move on, this might be the year to do so, since he has his best team in the dozen years he’s been here. He’s a Kelvin Sampson disciple.
9. Russ Turner–UC-Irvine
Turner might be coaching a Pac-12 team today if not for a statement made at the NCAA Tournament a few years ago that in modern times was considered too politically incorrect. Eventually, the statement will be forgotten, especially when a team needs a winning coach.
Turner has a very impressive coaching tree resume. He has assisted Dave Odom, Mike Montgomery, and the legendary Don Nelson (who comes from the Red Auerbach tree). Turner has excellent NBA contacts from his time with the Golden State Warriors, and he has shown in his time in Irvine that he can organize and run a successful college program, one that can win in the NCAA Tournament, as UCI has beaten a Big 12 team in a past Dance.
UCI had never been to the NCAA Tournament until Turner became head coach. The program had wallowed in mediocrity for eight years. After two seasons of putting the wheels in motion, the Anteaters began winning consistently and have won for 12 consecutive years.
Turners’ teams play tough defense and patient but smart offense. Turner gets more out of his talent than an average coach, and his in-game adjustments frequently lead to the Anteaters winning toss-up games.
8. Grant McCasland–North Texas
McCasland has won 20 games every year in his coaching career at Arkansas State and North Texas, not counting the Covid year when he won 18. The Mean Green play tough defense and usually control the boards. With a 16-5 record, North Texas trails Florida Atlantic, but must be considered the leading contender to the Owls in the CUSA Tournament.
7. Ben McCollum–Northwest Missouri St.
I put McCollum on my list last year, the first time ever for a Division 2 head coach. You probably have never heard of Ben McCollum. He has dominated the Division 2 ranks in recent years with five national championships, including an undefeated season. His teams play like Secretariat ran horse races. They are a “tremendous machine.” Usually, even the best teams have one exploitable weakness. Either they have suspect outside shooters, they are a bit soft inside, they don’t rebound well, they have a hard time holding onto the ball, or their defense is too passive. McCollum’s Northwest Missouri State teams are great in every factor.
How best can I explain the way McCollum’s teams play? They best remind me of the Indiana teams of 1975 and 1976. They run a highly-efficient offense that frequently shoots better than 50% from the field, better than 40% from the 3-point line, and better than 80% at the foul line. They prevent high percentage shots with an exceptional man-to-man defense with zone principles, and they play the passing lanes and get a lot of steals. Watching NW Mo. play in the Division 2 national tournament the last two years, they beat the other top teams in the tournament the way UCLA used to dispose of top teams during the John Wooden years, where some of these games were no longer in doubt two minutes into the contest. It was a matter of fact win where it looked like a college team playing a high school team. They won the last two national championships with little competition, as it was obvious quickly who would win the game.
McCollum lost the Division 2 equivalent of Larry Bird in Ryan Hawkins, and it figured that Northwest Missouri State would come back to the field some last year, but just like Coach Wooden in 1969-70, after the graduation of Kareem Abdul Jabbar, McCollum guided the Bearcats to another National Championship. The Bearcats are merely 9-0 in the Mid-America Conference and 16-1 overall.
If you don’t think a small college head coach can advance to a Power Conference school, then forget that Wooden came to UCLA from what was then an NAIA school in Indiana State, or that John Chaney came to Temple from Division 2 Cheyney State or that both Ray Mears and Bruce Pearl came to Tennessee from small colleges, Mears from Wittenberg and Pearl from Southern Indiana.
A smart Athletic Director that isn’t afraid to seek out McCollum might pull off the major coaching coup of the year. McCollum has stated that he has yet to be offered the right type of Division I job, one where he can make a difference in the lives of the players he coaches and the community where he coaches. I believe he might be holding out for a major college job with a team from a power conference and with a high academic standard.
6. Casey Alexander–Belmont
Alexander has coached two different Division 1 college teams while living in one house! How is that you ask? He lives exactly halfway between Nashville college rivals Lipscomb and Belmont. All he needed to do was change his commute direction going left on Belmont Boulevard after going right before then.
Alexander played at Belmont under one of the top legends in Mid-Major college basketball history in Rick Byrd. He eventually replaced his mentor at his alma mater. Prior to returning to Belmont, he had been at rival Lipscomb for six years. He rebuilt the once dynastic NAIA powerhouse into a strong Low-Major program in the Atlantic Sun Conference winning 20, 23, and 29 games his last three years with the Bisons. The final two editions went to the NCAA Tournament, where Lipscomb led North Carolina into the second half as a 15-seed playing a 2-seed.
He followed up that with a final year where he took the Bisons to the Atlantic Sun regular season championship. The Bisons lost in the Atlantic Sun Championship Game after leading in the final 10 minutes. Relegated to the NIT, Lipscomb advanced to the Championship Game, losing to Texas.
Moving to Belmont, Alexander has taken the Bruins to a 93-25 record in three plus years. Belmont had earned the automatic NCAA bid in 2020 before the tournament was canceled. After winning the OVC regular season title in 2021, the Bruins were upset in the tournament semifinals and finished the season 26-4. Belmont went 15-3/25-8 last year, which included wins over Iona, Saint Louis, and Chattanooga. After the season, Belmont moved from the Ohio Valley Conference to the much tougher Missouri Valley Conference, and the Bruins were facing a rebuilding season and picked to finish down in the pack. After a slow start, Belmont is now tied for first in the league at 9-2 and 16-6 overall.
Unlike a lot of teams, Belmont plays more of an old-fashioned motion offense with crisp, intelligent passing. It is a style that has made the Bruins one of the most efficient offenses in college basketball, and the Bruins are quite exciting to watch in person.
5. Anthony Grant–Dayton
Grant has coached in the big time before. He was the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth, winning the conference championship all three years in Richmond, as he took over for Jeff Capel and built the Rams’ dominance that Shaka Smart would inherit from him. In his first year at VCU, his team beat Duke in the NCAA Tournament before losing in overtime to Pittsburgh in the Round of 32.
Grant took over at Alabama following a year in which prior coach Mark Gottfried had resigned in mid-season, and the Tide had seen key recruits go elsewhere. The Alabama program he inherited had experienced winning SEC records just three times in the prior 13 years. After a big rebuild in year one, in which Alabama far exceeded expectations and took a Kentucky team with eight future NBA players to the wire in the SEC Tournament, the Crimson Tide turned things around with three consecutive winning SEC records and three consecutive 20-win seasons. Things took a bad turn when multiple players were suspended, and Alabama suffered a losing season in 2014. In 2015, the Tide was starting to return to competitiveness, and they just missed by a game or two of getting an NCAA Tournament bid, when Grant was fired.
His replacement at Alabama was former NBA Coach of the Year, Avery Johnson. Johnson’s four years in Tuscaloosa were mediocre at best, as the Tide never competed for the conference title and suffered through three losing conference records in the four years.
Meanwhile, Grant spent two years as an NBA assistant under his mentor Billy Donovan at Oklahoma City and then took the Dayton job in 2017-18. He inherited a big winner that was having to start over with a major rebuilding project. The first year was tough, as the Flyers suffered through a 14-17 season. The program improved quickly, going 21-12 in 2019 with an NIT appearance. 2020 was a big turnaround. With sophomore forward Obi Toppen developing brilliantly under Grant’s tutelage, the Flyers looked like a Final Four team and possible national title contender. Dayton went 28-2, running the table in the Atlantic 10. Both losses were in overtime, one to Kansas. Dayton sat at number three in the polls and was sure to earn a 1-seed in the Big Dance, until Covid knocked the tournament out cold.
After a 2021 season that saw many games canceled, Dayton finished 9-7 in the A-10 and 13-8 in the regular season. Last year, DU went 14-4 in the A-10 and 24-11 overall, and this year, the Flyers are back in contention in the league with a 5-3 league mark. They spent a couple weeks ranked in the top 25. Grant may be on the radar screen of a few Power Conference schools, if he can get this DU team to the Dance.
4. Pat Kelsey–College of Charleston
Kelsey won 4 Big South Championships in final 6 years at Winthrop including a 23-2 season in 2021. With 20 consecutive victories and a number 18 ranking in the AP Poll, Charleston is in line for a top 8 seed in the Big Dance if they keep winning and take the Colonial Athletic Association’s automatic bid.
Kelsey was an assistant to Chris Mack at Xavier when the Musketeers went 73-30 and won two Atlantic 10 Championships. His team is a master of the hustle stats.
3. Mike Rhoades–Virginia Commonwealth
Any coach that can go 23-12 at Rice earns permanent placement on this list. Rhoades was Shaka Smart’s top assistant at VCU before taking over at Rice for three years and then coming back to Richmond to replace Smart when he took the Texas job.
The Havoc Defense can disrupt a lot of teams, but one of the hidden assets of this defense is the amount of time a team must take to get the ball into the scoring zone. Even if the defense doesn’t force a turnover, if the opponent has 15 seconds to run its offense after getting the ball across halfcourt and then advancing it to the scoring zone, all it takes is a little more pressure to force the opponent to take a low percentage shot.
VCU’s players are used to playing this way night after night. Opponents frequently wilt when having to play a pressure game.
Under Rhoades, the Rams earned two NCAA Tournament invitations in his first four years, even though they didn’t get to play last year due to Covid forfeit.
Last year, Rhoades had to replace an NBA Draft pick, and then he lost his top big man to a torn ACL. He also had to begin the season without the services of his point guard who was still recovering from a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. Once Adrian Baldwin returned to the lineup, the Rams went 20-3 and finished in 2nd place in the A-10. This year, VCU is 7-1 and leading the league by a half-game over the coach at the top of this list. Rhoades is ready to coach at a Big East, ACC, Big Ten, SEC, or Big 12 school.
2. Joe Pasternack–UC Santa Barbara
Pasternack has been victimized twice as a head coach by things out of his control, and he has proven to be a coach that can withstand adversity and conquer it. He once was the head coach at the University of New Orleans, when the school decided to shut down the basketball program in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. With half of his team leaving just before the start of a season, Pasternack still produced a competitive team. In his final year, with UNO playing a Division 2 schedule but with a roster put together piece-meal, Pasternack produced a 16-6 record before the program went black.
Pasternack then spent seven years in Tucson, as an assistant to Sean Miller at Arizona. These were Miller’s best seven seasons at UA. After he left, the Wildcats’ regressed to the point where Miller was fired.
At UCSB, Pasternack inherited a program that had been 6-22 the year before with the worst field goal percentage in the nation at 37.7%. In his first year, Pasternack immediately repaired the offensive damage, producing a team that scored 15 more points per game and shot 46.4% from the field. Best of all, the Gauchos finished in a surprise second place in the Big West and won 23 games and came within a minute of knocking out UC-Irvine for the automatic bid to the Big Dance.
Three more 20-win seasons followed, culminated by the Gauchos winning the Big West regular season and tournament championships in 2021. As a 12-seed, they lost by one point to 5-seed Creighton in the second round.
After a large rebuild in 2022, where UCSB managed to pull through with a winning record, after the team was decimated by Covid and did not play for more than two weeks. Having to play three games a week for most of the rest of the year, the Gauchos somehow managed to finish 17-11.
This year, UCSB leads the Big West again with a 7-1 conference record and 16-3 record overall. Their offensive philosophy is to work the ball for high percentage shots, and Pasternack’s players run that offense beautifully.
What about his pedigree? It is golden. Pasternack is one of a handful of coaches not to have played college basketball. He attended Indiana, where he began learning the game under legend Bob Knight as a student volunteer assistant. His first paid gig was as an assistant to Ben Braun at UC-Berkeley.
1. Travis Ford–Saint Louis
2023’s number one coach has been number one on this list before. Ford’s pedigree includes playing for Norm Stewart at Missouri and Rick Pitino at Kentucky, playing on conference champions at both schools. At the age of 28, he became the head coach at NAIA school Campbellsville. The school was on probation for violations committed by the prior regime. After a rough first year, Ford guided the school to a 51-14 record, which caught the eye of Eastern Kentucky University.
Ford took over a EKU program needing a major facelift, and in each year he raised the Colonels’ conference win mark over the preceding season. It culminated with a trip to the NCAA Tournament in his fifth and final year in Richmond, KY.
UMass offered him their job in 2005, where he inherited an average squad from prior coach Steve Lappas. After a mediocre first season, the Minutemen won the Atlantic 10 Conference title in year two with a 13-3/24-9 mark. Ford followed that up with a 25-11 record the following year, which included a trip to the NIT Championship Game.
Ford’s next stop was at Oklahoma State. He replaced Sean Sutton, who had fashioned 6-10, 6-10, and 7-9 conference records in three years following his dad in Stillwater. In Ford’s first year at OSU, he guided the Cowboys to a 9-7 Big 12 record and invitation to the Big Dance for the first time in four years, where they beat Tennessee in the first round before falling to 1-seed Pittsburgh in a game the Pokes led in the second half.
All Ford did was take Oklahoma State to five NCAA Tournament berths in his seven years there, but that didn’t satisfy the folks in Stillwater. He was fired after year eight.
Ford was offered the Saint Louis job and has done quite well with the Billikens. Taking over a team that had suffered through back-to-back 21-loss seasons, SLU improved by a game in Ford’s first season, then broke even in the Atlantic 10 with an overall winning record in his second season, and then took the Billikens to the Big Dance in his third season. His record in the last five years is 97-46. SLU doesn’t get fat on a bunch of non-conference pushovers. The Billikens own wins over Memphis, Providence, Southern Illinois, and Drake, with a narrow loss at Auburn.
Ford belongs in a power conference. Many power conference schools would be happy with five Dance invitations in seven years. The Pitino coaching tree has consistent success, and Ford may be the best from that tree after Billy Donovan.
