NCAA Men’s Basketball Conference Tournament Update: 3/11/16

As we put finger to keypad, the time is T minus 60 hours until the Field of 68 is set.  Thursday was moving day in the lower half of the bracket with upset losses to what looked like teams certain to make the tournament.

In the biggest shocker of the day, Tennessee sent Vanderbilt packing quickly from the Southeastern Conference Tournament and probably doomed the Commodores to the NIT.

In Conference USA, UAB lost in Birmingham to Western Kentucky, and the Blazers have no chance of grabbing an at-large bid.

The Vanderbilt loss, combined with Syracuse’s loss on Wednesday, opened up two spots for teams on the Bubble that figured to be #1-seeds in the NIT.  For now, Monmouth and Tulsa move back into the Dance in place of the Commodores and Orangemen.

However, there are still Bubble teams alive in conference tournament action, and additional wins could move a lower Bubble team up into the field, while an unexpected loss could send a team out of the field.

Four American Conference teams in action today need to win to guarantee staying in the good graces of the Selection Committee.  Temple, Connecticut, Cincinnati, and Tulsa cannot all win today, as the Bearcats and Huskies square off in Quarterfinal Round action.

George Washington has a big game with St. Joe’s in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament’s Quarterfinal Round.  Sitting in the shadows is Davidson.  The Wildcats are not an at-large candidate, but they are capable of running the table and winning the league tourney.

The Big Ten is possibly the most interesting conference tournament still underway.  Michigan’s win yesterday over Northwestern kept the Wolverines in contention, and if the Maize and Blue can knock off Indiana today, the champions of the West might move up onto the Dance Floor.  Then, there are Ohio State, Illinois, and Nebraska still alive.  The Illini is playing like a totally different squad the last two days, and their win over Iowa did not look like a fluke.

In the Southeastern Conference, Alabama and Georgia looked like they were at their peaks last night in impressive 2nd Round wins, while Florida played well in stretches to stay alive.  Then, there is Tennessee, trying to win five games in five days with a depleted roster.  If the Vols can get by LSU today, they still would need to beat the Texas A&M-Florida winner to make it to the Championship Game.

Once again, no new teams earned automatic bids yesterday and none will do so today.  Tomorrow, it gets rather busy, and we will be spending the day communicating with the PiRate Bracketology team to present you with a much better Sunday report.  So, check back Sunday afternoon just prior to the Selection Committee’s reveal to see how our Gurus predict the field.
