PiRate Ratings: College Football–October 14, 2013

Undefeated List Dwindles To 14

As the season approaches the halfway mark, we watched three teams fall from the ranks of the unbeatens on Saturday.  Texas clobbered Oklahoma to quiet a lot of Mack Brown detractors and stir up a lot of Bob Stoops detractors.  Penn St. had their big “whiteout game” and upset Michigan in four overtimes.  Utah looked like the aggressor in their upset of Stanford.

Still, that leaves a sizeable number of teams without a loss at 14, but that will soon decrease in large numbers, because many of these unbeaten teams will face off before the bowl season.

Let’s look at the 14 remaining teams without a loss and show you why at least six must lose due to having one of their undefeated brethren on the schedule.

In the AAC, Louisville and Houston face off November 16 in Louisville.  We do not believe the Cougars will still be undefeated by then, but one of these teams will definitely lose on the 16th.

There are three undefeated teams in the ACC, and one will lose this weekend as Clemson hosts Florida St.  The winner of that game will then possibly have to deal with Miami in the conference title game, and if both participants have run the table, it will lead to the most important ACC Championship Game ever.

The Big 12 still has two undefeated teams with Baylor and Texas Tech both surviving scares Saturday.  If they continue winning, their big contest is also November 16, and the game is a neutral site game set for Cowboys’ Stadium in Arlington.  Should they both still be undefeated, it will be bigger than any Dallas game played there to date.

The Pac-12 could have its monumental game in two weeks.  Oregon should easily dispose of Washington St. this weekend, but UCLA faces an unenviable task of playing at Stanford this week.  Should the Bruins emerge with the mild upset, then they will face the Ducks at Autzen Stadium for probably the first of two meetings this year.  If Oregon runs the table by beating UCLA twice as well as winning at Stanford and at Arizona, this team will be more than ready to play for the national title.

The SEC always seems to have a second half of the season thriller with two unbeaten teams.  Alabama is almost always one of the two participants in a game like this, but if they are to face another unbeaten team this year, it will have to come in the SEC Championship Game against Missouri.  The Tigers won at Georgia but lost star quarterback James Franklin to a separated shoulder.  At best, Franklin will be able to return in the second half of December, so Mizzou will have to run the table with backup Maty Mauk directing the offense.  Mauk is considerably better than last year’s replacement when Franklin was injured, Corbin Berkstresser, so the Tigers have a chance to hold onto their unbeaten record, as all the tough remaining games are at home.

The remaining undefeated teams still have big obstacles in their paths to running the table.  Ohio St. has a regular season finale at Michigan and then must defeat the Legends Division winner the following week in the Big Ten Championship Game.  The Buckeyes do not face Michigan St. or Nebraska, but one of those two should be the opponent in the December 7 title game.

Northern Illinois could quietly sneak back into a BCS Bowl game for the second consecutive season.  The Huskies sit at 6-0 with two difficult, but winnable, games left before the MAC Championship Game.  They host Ball St. on Wednesday, November 13 and then the following Wednesday play at Toledo.  The East Division should supply a game challenger in either Bowling Green or Buffalo, but NIU has an excellent shot at running the table and heading to the Fiesta Bowl.

Fresno St. has a tougher road than Northern Illinois, but if the Bulldogs run the table, they will more than likely trump a 13-0 NIU team.  Only one non-AQ team can earn an automatic bid to a BCS Bowl, even if two schools meet the qualifications of finishing in the top 12 in the final BCS rankings or finishing in the top 16 of the BCS rankings while also finishing ahead of a team that automatically qualified from one of the big six leagues.  The Bulldogs’ big deterrent to going 13-0 is a rematch with Boise St. in the MWC Championship Game.  Fresno beat Boise by one in Fresno back on September 20, and since then Boise St. looks like the better team.

Notre Dame Not In The Hunt–Presently

For Notre Dame to qualify for a BCS Bowl, the Irish must finish in the top eight of the final BCS rankings.  As of today, their simulated BCS ranking finds them outside of the top 25.  If Coach Brian Kelly’s team can run the table, which would include wins over USC and Stanford, they could sneak in through the backdoor.  Notre Dame could still earn an at-large bid if they win nine games and finish in the top 14 of the BCS, but a lot of things must happen for the Irish to qualify for a BCS Bowl if they finish outside of the top eight.  With three losses, the Irish will have virtually no chance to garner an at-large BCS Bowl bid.
