Reruns?

It’s Déjà vu all over again.  Last year, the college football fan nation awaited anxiously for the Alabama-LSU game.  When LSU emerged with an overtime victory although Alabama outgained the Tigers 295-239, it caused a lot of fans outside those two states to believe the better team lost.  Alabama proved it in the National Championship Game.

LSU was clearly the second best team in the nation last year.  The Tigers finished second overall in defense by allowing just 90 yards rushing and a little more than 170 yards passing, giving up 11.3 points per game.

Alabama’s defensive numbers almost resembled the defensive numbers produced by Bear Bryant’s teams of the 1960’s.  In 2011, the Tide gave up just 8.2 points, 72 yards rushing, and 111 yards passing per game.  In 1961, when Bryant won his first national title at his alma mater, the Tide gave up just 25 points all season; they allowed less than 100 yards against the run and the pass.

The 2011 defense was better than the 1961 defense.  In 1961, most teams still ran either the split-T, straight-T, or wing-T offense.  The rules of the day still forced teams to have two-way players.  Offenses were not close to being sophisticated.

What has the Tide done for an encore?  After giving up 14 points to Michigan in the opener, they have shut out back-to-back opponents.  Western Kentucky may not be a big name in football, but the Hilltoppers are almost a lock to earn their first FBS bowl trip this year.  Arkansas may not have had Tyler Wilson available, but Knile Davis, a host of good receivers, and a talented offensive line is good enough to score 24-28 points on just about any other team.

The Tide should be 8-0 when they go to Baton Rouge on November 3.  Road games against Missouri and Tennessee do not look so difficult as they did a few weeks ago.  Home games against Florida Atlantic, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State will be laughers.

LSU looks more impressive on the attack side this year, while their defense is only slightly weaker than a year ago.  The Tigers will get their first major test on October 6, when they visit Florida.  A week later, they host South Carolina, and then they follow that with a trip to Texas A&M.  This is a much tougher road than what faces the Tide, but the Tigers have a strong shot at being 8-0 when they host the Tide in November.

In the 10-year period after WWII from 1947 to 1956, Major League baseball was all about the Dodgers against the Yankees.  The two teams faced off six times in the World Series.  It was the greatest rivalry in World Series history.  However, this domination eventually hurt baseball, as the other teams rarely figured in the pennant races.

The NCAA will avoid this catastrophe thanks to the 2014 implementation of a playoff.

Big Ten Woes

It all began to crumble in January of 2007.  The Big Ten Conference was riding high through the 2006 season.  Ohio State and Michigan won big week after week.  By the week of their November 18 game, the Buckeyes and Wolverines sported identical 11-0 records.  Ohio State was number one and Michigan was number two.  Wisconsin won their finale earlier in the day to finish 11-1, losing only to Michigan.  There was a chance that the Big Ten could go 1, 2, and 3 in the final poll.

Ohio State edged Michigan at the Horseshoe in Columbus.  Figuring that Ohio Stadium’s home field advantage was worth more than the three points that they won by, a lot of football pundits believed the teams should play again for the national title, just like Alabama and LSU did five years later.  Alas, Ohio State faced Florida.  Michigan was left to the Rose Bowl.

Southern Cal destroyed Michigan in Pasadena.  After returning the opening kick for a touchdown, Ohio State did nothing the rest of the night, losing to Florida 41-14.

Ohio State returned to the National Championship Game the following year; it was a weaker Buckeye team that beat Akron by less than three touchdowns and lost to Illinois.  LSU beat OSU by two touchdowns to take the title.  Since that time, no Big Ten team has come close to earning a trip to the National Championship Game.

Ohio State is 3-0 but not all that dominating this year, but even if the Buckeyes run the table, they will stay home this year during the bowl season.  Penn State will be lucky to finish 6-6 this year, and of course the Nittany Lions will stay at home this bowl season.  Wisconsin is lucky to be 2-1 instead of 0-3 after narrowly beating Northern Iowa, losing to Oregon State, and barely beating Utah State.  The Big Ten Leaders Division could be won by Purdue or Illinois.

In the Legends, all three co-favorites have lost out of conference games to teams that dominated them all night.  Michigan looked like a junior varsity team against Alabama.  Michigan State may not have scored a touchdown against Notre Dame if they had played 10 quarters.  Nebraska could not stop UCLA at any point in their game.

Northwestern is 3-0, with wins over Syracuse, Vanderbilt, and Boston College.  The Wildcats could even start 7-0 before hosting Nebraska in mid October.

The Big Ten has fallen to fifth best conference in FBS football.

Two Non AQ Teams Still In The Running

Boise State and Nevada are out, as is every other Mountain West team.  Nobody in Conference USA is undefeated.  Just two non-automatic qualifiers remain undefeated.  Ohio U in the Mid-American Conference and Louisiana Tech in the WAC are the only undefeated non-automatic qualifying teams left.

Ohio U has a favorable schedule the rest of the way.  The Bobcats won at Penn State and Marshall, the only two tough games on their schedule until a MAC Championship Game against Western Michigan, Toledo, or Northern Illinois.  This schedule is not strong enough to garner Coach Frank Solich’s squad a BCS Bowl bid, but should the Bobcats finish the regular season at 13-0, some form of deal should be struck to get Ohio to a better bowl.  A 13-0 Ohio team against a 10-2 team from a BCS conference would make a great matchup.

Louisiana Tech has a much tougher path to an undefeated season.  The Bulldogs play at Illinois and Virginia the next two weeks.  They have a makeup game in Shreveport against Texas A&M four Saturdays from now.  They close the season against Utah State and San Jose State.  We do not see LT running the table.
