PiRate Picks For College And Pro Football–November 12-14, 2011

The Autumn Wind Is A PiRate (Rating?)

The Autumn wind is a pirate, Blustering in from sea.
With a rollicking song, he sweeps along, Swaggering boisterously.
His face is weather-beaten.  He wears a hooded sash.
With a silver hat about his head, And a bristling black mustache.
He growls as he storms the country, A villain big and bold.
And the trees all shake and quiver and quake, As he robs them of their gold.
The Autumn wind is a Raider, Pillaging just for fun.
He’ll knock you ’round and upside down, And laugh when he’s conquered and won.          —-Steve Sabol, NFL Films

The PiRate Ratings are not named for this poem, but we consider it as much our fight song as it is the Oakland Raiders’.  For what it’s worth, “PiRate” is an abbreviation on the name of the founder of the ratings, and he used “Pi” (3.1415926536) as a constant in his original equation back in 1969.

Now, that we hope we have made you feel like it is true football weather, let’s see which teams will become the real pillagers this week.

We here flying the black skull and crossbones flag and sailing the high seas, or at least posting from high on a hill in beautiful, cool, crisp (and at peak autumn colors) Middle Tennessee, are set to rob Vegas of its booty this week.  We hope to rob them of their gold, especially since, in our opinion, our favorite metal is due to break out and top $2,000 an ounce in the next 12 months.

We have one tried and true rule here—never go with an even number of selections.  Going .500 is a losing proposition, so why set it up so that it is possible?  We always choose an odd number of selections.

Another thing we do not like to do is go with a team in more than one selection.  We do it, but we usually do it as a means of insurance.  For instance, if we take UCLA over Arizona as a money line favorite and then take UCLA as an underdog to the Wildcats in a teaser, this can be considered insurance on a possible Arizona upset by a couple points.  Of course, it Arizona wins by too many, it just cost us two selections.  Thus, we consider it a split selection, with half of what we planned on investing going to each selection.

Enough with the details, let’s get to the selections for the week.  And, let’s go pillaging just for fun.
