PiRate Picks For College And Pro Football–October 8-10, 2011

Last week’s selections went 9-5-1 for 64.3%, but remember this:  until this year, we were a five and sometimes six-person committee spending too many hours looking into these games and consistently beating the spread 64-67% of the time.  Now, it is just two of us, and we have to take our Geritol to get our brains working.  So, in other words, don’t be foolish and rely on these picks to save your house from the mortgage company.

Straight Selections

1. Texas + 10 ½ vs. Oklahoma

The annual Red River Rivalry in Dallas should be a closer game than expected.  Texas may not be all the way back yet, but we are not 100% sold on Oklahoma as one of the nation’s elite.  The Sooners have played two good teams so far, and they won them both by 10 points.  Texas is a good team, and we believe the Longhorns are not being given their due.  Thus, this line appears to us to be off by about five points.  We won’t call for Texas to win outright, but we believe they will cover.  Call it a 34-27 win for the Sooners.

2. Notre Dame -14 vs. Air Force

The Irish are back on track, and they should cover this spread with relative ease.  Notre Dame crushed Michigan State by 18 points, and Air Force would not beat the Spartans one time in 10.  The Falcons lost at home to a rebuilding TCU by more than two touchdowns, and we can see them yielding 40 points in this game.  We see the Irish winning 45-24.

3. Michigan -7 vs. Northwestern

The national public has not yet jumped on the Wolverines’ bandwagon.  They remember a maize and blue defense that could not stop any conference foe last year.  So far under Coach Brady Hoke, UM is giving up just 10.2 points per game, while they are scoring 37.2 points per game.  Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa is expected to start, but after suffering a minor setback in his return last week, we feel he may be a little gun shy this week.  We believe Michigan will win this one 35-17.

4. Wyoming +12 ½ vs. Utah State

The Aggies have lost three games in ways other schools might not experience in a decade.  Their lone win came against Weber State.  Wyoming is off to a 3-1 start, and they had an extra week to prepare for this game.  We feel like the Cowboys actually have a decent chance of pulling off the upset, but even if they fall short, Wyoming should cover this spread and lose by single digits.  Look for a 28-24 game that either team could win.
